During an anabolic steroid cycle, natural testosterone production suppression is inevitable and is not necessarily a problem. However, extensive post-cycle suppression results in a loss of gains and can cause undesirable side effects such as depression and loss of libido.

On the other hand, when the resumption of natural testosterone production is rapid, adverse effects on mood or libido can be reduced or eradicated, and retention of gains can be excellent. Post cycle therapy with Tamoxifen (Nolvadex) has been introduced specifically to allow faster recovery.
